Saint Paul Port Authority To Acquire Former Kmart Site for Redevelopment

Saint Paul, MN – [December 17, 2024]

The Saint Paul Port Authority is excited to announce its acquisition of the long-vacant former Kmart site at 35E and Maryland Ave E. This acquisition represents a significant step in the port Authority’s mission to revitalize underutilized properties and drive economic growth in the region.

The site, which has been dormant for several years, presents an exciting opportunity for the Port Authority, in partnership with the city of St. Paul, to apply its expertise in transforming blighted properties into thriving business and job centers.

“The redevelopment of the former Kmart site is a powerful example of transforming underutilized spaces into vibrant hubs that drive economic growth,” said Mayor Melvin Carter. “This initiative highlights the Saint Paul Port Authority’s ongoing commitment to revitalizing our city and building opportunity in our community”

“The transformation of this site fits perfectly without mission to turn underused properties into valuable community assets,” said Todd Hurley, President & CEO of the Saint Paul Port Authority. “We’ve successfully redeveloped neighboring sites like Arlington-Jackson Business Center, Williams Hill, and Westminster Junction into thriving hubs, and we’re confident the Kmart site will follow suit, generating jobs, expanding the tax base, and fostering local business growth.”

“Redevelopment of this industrial site is a long-overdue win for the North End neighborhood, bringing new opportunities, jobs, and vitality to this underutilized corner of Saint Paul,” said Saint Paul Councilmember Hwa Jeong Kim. “I look forward to working with the Port Authority and project stakeholders to ensure this exciting venture benefits the community and strengthens our local economy for years to come.”

The Port Authority is actively seeking and collaborating with development partners to bring this vision to life. With its strategic location at a major intersection, the site offers immense potential for business expansion, job creation and reinforcing the local tax base contributing to Saint Paul’s overall fiscal health.

“We’re excited to work with developers and the community to create a vibrant space that supports Saint Paul’s continued growth,” added Hurley. “This project is another step towards building a stronger, more resilient city for the future.”
